Bongo Fury – 6.12.2010 @ Kilgore Books/Wax Trax

Over the weekend, Kilgore Books celebrated it’s second birthday (and the release of Blammo #6) complete with live music, cake, and champagne.  Bongo Fury kicked off the afternoon fun with a short, intimate set.

Experimental Showcase – 6.13.2009 @ Curious Theatre, Westword Music Showcase

The 2010 Westword Music Showcase is almost upon us, and in anticipation I’ve decided to sit down this rainy weekend and post a few sets from last years event.  Yesterday included a repost of The Fluid’s set, and this morning I just finished tracking out the Experimental Showcase.  Held at the Curious Theatre, some of Denver’s finest experimental musicians took the stage together in a performance closely fashioned after the “singer-songwriters in the round” format.  BDRMPPL, Married in Berdichev, Iuengliss, CacheFlowe, Pictureplane and Slight Harp all took the stage, trading the lead for each tune.

Bad Weather California – 5.14.2010 @ Quixote’s True Blue

I was a bit curious to see an organ on the stage last night when I walked into the Bad Weather California soundcheck last night.  Curiosity gave way to excitement when I discovered that Aaron Collins has joined the lineup!  Aaron’s organ fills are a perfect complement to the band’s older material.  The additional instrumentation allows Bad Weather California to tread new musical ground on fresh tunes like “About This Time” and (still untitled?) Latin and African jams.

BWC continue their three-night residency with Akron/Family tonight (+ Widowers and Candy Claws) and tomorrow (+ Woodsman and Snake Rattle Rattle Snake), so come down and check out the new lineup!

Tony Furtado – 3.13.2010 @ Swallow Hill

It’s always a pleasure seeing Tony Furtado perform solo, and the undivided attention of the Daniels Hall crowd on this particular night led to a great recording!  Tony’s duets with Trina Hamlin were highlights of the night, particularly prison work songs Hurtin’ in My Right Side and Oh Berta, Berta.

Nick Oliveri and Mark Lanegan – 10.04.2003 @ Larimer Lounge

I uncovered this 2003 show last weekend when going through an old box of DATs.  On a night off between Queens of the Stone Age gigs, Nick Oliveri stopped by the Larimer Lounge for a last-minute solo acoustic set.  The highlights of this set (for me) were the cover of Roky Erickson’s Bloody Hammer, and Mark Lanegan‘s appearance on-stage to sing vocals on a few tracks.  I ran out of batteries near the end of the show, but by that point the crowd had become so intoxicated you could barely hear the guitar over the tomfoolery.

Update: Westword still has a review of this show available online.

Kissing Party – 10.16.2009 @ Twist and Shout Records

The release of Radio 1190‘s third installment in their superior Local Shakedown CD series was ushered in this month with a hat-trick of record store release parties.  While I was too gutless to brave the game-day Pearl Street crowd for the Bart’s performance, I did make it out to Twist and Shout and Wax Trax.  In this first installment, Kissing Party soldier through busted amps and a rough vocal mix before finally landing in musical bliss half-way through their set.  Hey, when do in-store shows ever come off perfectly??

Hearts of Palm (Nathan and Stephen) – 11.07.2009 @ Hi-Dive

A fitting end to a great ride…thanks to Nathan, Stephen and the rest of the crew for a great few years of music!

Never thought you’d be
   where you are standing today
You had hoped for more
and you can see it on your face
Take a look around
and don’t feel you recognize this place
Never thought your life
was gonna turn out this way

Little squares of paper, folded over again
The greenest grass you’d ever see
The places that we thought we be
We’ll end where we began

It isn’t worth the time
for you to wish your life away
Cause who’s to say
it wouldn’t turn out the same
And to be honest I am thankful for the rain
Cause it made the man
who we see standing here today
