Park Pourbaix – 1.09.2009 @ Meadowlark

Ellison Park and Tim Pourbaix have been sharing the stage together for several months under the “Park Pourbaix” moniker, but Friday night was my first exposure to the collaborative effort.  There’s some great material here!  I’m hoping we see a proper release of these songs later in the year, but for now you can hear demos via the artists’ myspace pages.

Mike Marchant EP Release – 1.09.2009 @ Meadowlark

As Mike stated at the opening of his set, “Thank you very much for being here, we’re shocked and appalled by the turnout.”  Never have I seen the Meadowlark as crowded as it was last night for Mike Marchant‘s EP Release.  Those brave enough to traverse the endless flow of bodies and get up front were treated to early performances by Ellison Park and Tim Pourbaix, Sunset Curse, and Achille Lauro.

By the time Mike took the stage (accompanied by Cole Rudy, Maria Kohler, and his Widowers bandmates), the crowd had thinned down to a manageable level.  The set contained songs from the new EP, “Outer Space and the Sea”, several Widowers classics, and (in Meadowlark tradition) closed with Mike’s solo covers of Funeral Home (Daniel Johnston) and In Heaven (David Lynch).  If you skipped out early, here’s a living document of what was missed.

Andrea Ball – 10.04.2008 @ Meadowlark

Here’s a nice intimate Meadowlark set from Andrea Ball, backed by Carl Sorenson on drums.  Andrea treated the crowd to several new tunes (title guesses in quotes), demonstrating her ever-growing songwriting abilities.

Houses – 11.06.2008 @ Meadowlark

I was quite surprised when Andy annouced between songs at the Meadowlark that this was the second time Houses had performed for a crowd.  For a band that had only taken the stage once prior to Friday night, the buzz is already spreading among Denver music fans.  After seeing the show, it’s easy to understand why.

Judging by the crowd response, Houses promise to be a great addition to the local scene.  Their set showcases a number of catchy indie pop singalongs (reminiscent of Hearts of Palm), mellow jangles, dark jams, and straight-up rockers such as the “Good-Times Bad-Times” influenced “Red Feather”.

Houses have two shows left on the books for this year.  Don’t miss ’em!

  • 11/28/2008 – Meadowlark
  • 12/13/2008 – Larimer Lounge

The Wheel – 8.23.2008 @ Meadowlark

Here’s another great one from the Living Room Series!

Note #1: I grabbed this photo from Doug’s post to The Wheel myspace page.  He has some great shots from the weekend posted over at his gallery, as well as excellent footage of many other Denver events.

Note #2: I was at a loss for song titles on this set.  If anyone can fill in the blanks, let me know!
